Ronan O'Rahilly founded the first of several pirate radio stations that challenged BBC radio's dominance in the 1960s.

After passing the Marine Broadcasting Act, Radio Caroline continued to broadcast from ships until 1991.

Radio Caroline started broadcasting again on medium wave in 2017 (648kHz) which is more important than ever to fight the lag of art and culture in nowadays commercial radio stations
